Abu Dhabi came to specialty coffee late and then went at it properly. There are now roasters cupping their own beans in Al Raha, award-winning V60 bars on Saadiyat, and a cluster of cafes in Khalifa City good enough that people drive across the bridge for them. These twelve are the ones worth the trip.

A 4.9 across 5,592 reviews, which is the largest verified rating base of any cafe in the emirate. Outdoor seating with a view, a carrot cake people write paragraphs about, and prices well under the chains.
The QC Roastery & Academy
The owners roast their own beans and run barista classes from the same room. Two small tables, Colombia espresso and Ethiopia V60, and a level of care you can taste. Closed Saturdays.
Coffee Architecture
Fast reliable wifi, staff who do not mind you staying for hours, and an award-winning signature orange coffee. One reviewer drove from Dubai on a recommendation and said it was worth it.
Twenty Three Five
A perfect 5.0, the only one on this page, though from just 66 reviews. House blend, Tropicana and Azul are the signatures, and the cookies get taken home. New, small and very good.
Fynd Cafe
The matcha people call the best in Abu Dhabi, a drive-through lane, and a Jumeirah shake worth ordering over the coffee. 4.8 across a thousand reviews.
Eggcellent
Waterfront seating, a crispy chicken croffle that has its own following, and a menu for dogs if yours is coming. Prices that do not match the setting, in a good way.

1. Caffeino
The most reviewed cafe in the emirate and still holding a 4.9, which almost nothing does at that scale. Outdoor seating looking out over the water, a genuinely large menu, and a carrot cake that reviewers keep calling the best they have had. Reasonable prices for the area.

2. Laverne Cafe
A calm, stylish room in the middle of the city that works equally for reading, working or a proper breakfast. The classic and salmon benedicts come on warm croissants, and the marble-and-soft-lighting fit-out is a cut above the mall norm. Open until one in the morning.

3. Beverly Speciality Coffee
Proof that a mall cafe can be serious. A 4.9 across nearly 2,500 reviews, warm lighting and soft seating rather than the usual food-court treatment, and desserts that are the reason many people come. Quiet in the mornings.

4. Fynd Cafe
A small drive-through-style cart with an outsized reputation, mostly built on matcha. The iced coconut matcha and cloud matcha are the orders, the Jumeirah shake is the sleeper, and the egg and chips bagel makes it a breakfast stop too.

5. Coffee Architecture
An award-winning bar on the Saadiyat waterfront, and the strongest V60 programme in the city. Colombia Luna and Ethiopia pour-overs, a signature orange coffee that people travel for, and staff who let you sit and work. Outdoor seating is the winter play.

6. Saddle Cafe
The Khalifa City institution and one of the busiest cafes in the emirate. Acai smoothies, flat croissants with berries and cream, and a room that runs from six in the morning to one at night. Priced a little above the neighbourhood average.

7. The QC Roastery & Academy
The most serious coffee on this page. The owners roast on site, run barista classes in the back and will walk you through the beans before you order. Two small tables, so this is a pilgrimage rather than a hangout. Closed Saturdays and shuts at six.

8. Eggcellent
A waterfront all-day cafe that leans breakfast and brunch. The crispy chicken croffle is the signature, prices are lower than the setting suggests, and they now do a menu for dogs, which the Marasy crowd has taken to.

9. Blackout Speciality Coffee
In Masdar Central Park, and the setting does a lot of the work: elegant, calm, good indoors and out. The hot chocolate gets as much praise as the coffee, and the desserts are the reason most tables order a second round. Open until half past midnight.

10. Tru Boutique Cafe
Costa Rica beans done well, an iced Spanish latte that regulars order across all its branches, and a fit-out people compare favourably to Europe. Plenty of parking, which matters out here. Open six in the morning to two at night.

11. Twenty Three Five Specialty Coffee
The only perfect score on this page, from a small new room on Wadi al Hafeef Street. House blend, Morning Matcha, Tropicana and Azul are the signatures, and the cookies come home with people. Sixty-six reviews is not yet evidence, so treat this as a tip.

12. Things Specialty Coffee & Concept Store
Coffee and a concept store in one, near Etihad Plaza. Strong breakfast menu with halloumi fig toast, avocado feta toast and Turkish eggs, plus tiramisu and French toast. The coffee runs on the mild side, which suits some and not others.

Where the coffee is
Khalifa City. The densest cluster in the emirate and the one worth crossing the bridge for. Saddle, Fynd, Tru, Joud and Things all within a few minutes of each other.
Al Bateen and Marasy. Caffeino, Eggcellent and H’s Specialty Coffee, all with water views and all leaning breakfast.
Saadiyat and the Corniche. Coffee Architecture on Mamsha is the serious one. Laverne in the WTC Souk is the central option.
Masdar and Yas. Blackout in Masdar Central Park and Beverly in Yas Mall, both better than their locations suggest.
Al Raha. The QC Roastery, which is where to go if you actually want to talk about beans.
One local note: karak stands are a parallel universe to all of this. Every neighbourhood has one, they cost a dirham or two, and nobody in Abu Dhabi thinks of them as competing with specialty coffee.
