The Best Mandi in Abu Dhabi
Mandi is the best-value meal in the emirate. Slow-cooked lamb or chicken over spiced rice, served on a shared platter, eaten with your hands, and enough for two people for the price of one mall sandwich. The Yemeni houses do it best, and most of them are nowhere near the tourist areas.

How we rate mandi
Every place is scored out of 100 on five things, so the order is repeatable rather than a matter of taste.

GulfOnline Recommends
Five picks for five different reasons, chosen on the criteria above and not for payment.
Mandi Man
A 4.8 across 1,683 reviews for mandi that regulars call the best in the emirate, tender meat and rice that actually carries flavour. Even the packaging design gets singled out, which tells you how much care goes in.
Bait Al Kushna
The Yemeni benchmark on the island, doing mandi, madhbi, zurbian and fahsa with the big round bread. 2,679 reviews at 4.7, street parking outside, and masoob with ice cream to finish.
Namak Mandi
Peshawari rather than Yemeni, and the highest review count in this category at 3,865. Truck-art walls, dewan floor seating, chapli kebab and kabuli pulao. A destination rather than a stop.
Madfon Alkhalij
Madfoon meat is the order here and reviewers are unanimous on it. Complimentary qahwa, Sulaimani tea and dates arrive without asking, and the kunafa is worth staying for.
Bayt Al Shawaya
A large room with a proper kids play area and generous fish platters from around AED 105 for two. The trade-off is that it gets very busy, and service thins out when it does.
The 7 best mandi restaurants in Abu Dhabi, ranked
Ordered by score. Ratings and review counts are what Google showed in August 2026.
1. Mandi Man
Consistently described as one of the best mandi experiences in the emirate, and the one people name first on the mainland. Mutton and chicken both come out tender, the rice is rich rather than dry, and the takeaway packaging is unusually well done. Clean room, quick service, very affordable.
- Al Ard Street, Sas Al Nakheel
- Noon to 11pm, from 1pm Friday
- Affordable, generous portions
- Mutton mandi, chicken mandi

2. Bait Al Kushna
The Yemeni house on the island, behind Etisalat in Khalidiyah, and the most reviewed mandi in central Abu Dhabi. Zurbian with local meat, chicken glabah, lamb madfoon and fahsa with the large round bread. Chicken can run dry, so mutton is the safer order.
- Khalidiyah, behind Etisalat
- 9am to midnight daily
- Zurbian, madfoon, fahsa, masoob
- Street parking available

3. Namak Mandi
Peshawari cooking rather than Yemeni, which is why it sits third on a mandi page despite the highest rating and review count here. Truck art on the walls, traditional dewan floor seating alongside tables, chapli kebab that people rate 9 out of 10, and mutton karahi compared favourably to Peshawar itself.
- Ath Thiqah 2 Street, Musaffah M17
- 10am to 12.30am daily
- Chapli kebab, kabuli pulao, mutton shinwari
- Floor seating and tables

4. Madfon Alkhalij
The MBZ standby, and madfoon is what to order rather than mandi. Goat with mandi or bukhari rice, moqalqel, hanis ribs and seafood, plus complimentary qahwa, Sulaimani tea and dates. Portions are built for sharing, so one order feeds two comfortably.
- Al Manhal Street, MBZ City Z19
- 9am to midnight daily
- Complimentary qahwa, tea and dates
- Madfoon meat, hanis ribs, kunafa

5. Bayt Al Shawaya
The family option. A large villa-style room with a kids play area, fish platters from around AED 105 for two, and molawah bread that gets consistently good notices. It gets crowded, particularly during Ramadan, and portions of fahsa run small.
- Mohammed Bin Khalifa Street, Al Manhal
- 8am to midnight daily
- Kids play area, lots of parking
- Very busy at peak times

6. Arabian Majlis
The central option, near Madinat Zayed with underground parking, and the easiest of these to reach without a car. Charcoal chicken with rice is the pick and the lamb gets strong notices. Prices run above the Mussafah houses, and Kerala regulars say the UAE branches do not match the original.
- 838 Electra Street, near Madinat Zayed
- 11.30am to 1am daily
- Mall parking underneath
- Pricier than the mainland houses

7. Al Mandi & Al Madhbi House
A small, cosy room in the Tourist Club area, and the most central dedicated mandi house. Lamb mandi gets good reviews and the broth that comes with it is the highlight. But quality is inconsistent, with repeated complaints about meat portions and food prepared well in advance.
- Street 16, Al Zahiyah
- 10am to 11.30pm daily
- Lamb mandi, broth soup
- Quality varies, check portions

Mandi, madfoon, madhbi: what is the difference
Mandi is cooked in a pit or a sealed oven, with the meat suspended above the rice so the fat drips down into it. Steam does the work, so the meat is tender and there is no char.
Madfoon means buried. Same principle, but the meat is wrapped and cooked in the ground or a sealed pot, which gives a deeper, smokier flavour. Madfon Alkhalij is the one for this.
Madhbi is grilled on a hot stone over coals, so it does get char. Drier and smokier than mandi.
Zurbian is closer to biryani, with the rice cooked together with spices and potato.
Three practical notes. Portions are built for sharing, so one mandi generally feeds two. Most of these places serve on the floor as well as at tables, and eating with your hands is normal rather than optional. And a broth soup usually arrives first at no extra charge, which is the best part of the meal at several of these.
